53rd District Poll

The Five Reasons Why Jim Scott is Out of Touch with His Constituents

The Constituents of the 53rd District Do Not Even Know Their Delegate is Jim Scott:

In a recent poll of Asian-Americans and Hispanic-Americans, and the general population within the 53rd District, some startling results were found.

The poll was conducted by the Newlink-Group. 300 people were questioned. 56.3% of responders were female. 43.7% of responders were male. 82.3% of responders were over the age of 45.

90.3% of the responders were born in the USA.

The Results:

-Only 26.7% of those polled knew Jim Scott was their State Delegate.

-31% had never heard of Jim Scott.

-32.3% said they had heard of candidate Christopher Merola and had viewed or will view his web site.

This means more people polled in the 53rd District have heard of candidate Christopher Merola than have heard of Jim Scott, who is an 18-year incumbent.

After serving in several public offices for 33 years combined, Jim Scott’s name identification is only 26.6%.

Results continued:

-12% of those polled thought that Transportation funds were adequately used to build and construct roads within the 53rd District.

-13.3% of those polled thought that Transportation funds were not adequately used to build and construct roads within the 53rd District.

- 45.7% were unsure.

This should be a concern for Delegate Jim Scott.  Most of these people said they will vote this Tuesday.

-92% of these same voters say they will vote this November 3rd.

v  Jim Scott is Unfamiliar with Modern Technology

During their October 21, 2009 debate in Falls Church, VA, Jim Scott accused his opponent, Republican Christopher Merola, of posting inflammatory advertisements on his campaign web site.

Outraged and shocked by such allegations, candidate Merola strongly denied any advertisements had ever appeared on his campaign web site (
www.merola09.com).

Jim Scott insisted he saw advertisements on Merola’s campaign web site three more times.  In response to Scott's false allegations, Merola continued to deny any advertisements were ever on his web site on three more different occasions during the debate.

When candidate Merola realized that Jim Scott had actually viewed an op-ed he had written some time ago, which was placed on someone else’s web site, not the Merola 09 campaign web site, he then explained to the audience what Jim Scott had looked at were advertisements placed on another web site.  After making it abundantly clear to Jim Scott that Scott had viewed an op-ed on another web site, Merola then demanded an apology from Jim Scott immediately.

Scott reluctantly did apologize, but only after candidate Merola held up a blackberry device to show the audience there were no advertisements of any kind on his campaign web site.

Christopher Merola contends that when a public official, specifically, Jim Scott, demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding concerning the internet and modern technology, the community must certainly question that official’s competence and qualifications.

Jim Scott Demonstrates Behavior that is Unbecoming of a State Delegate

When the leader of the Northern Virginia Tea Party organization attended the Falls Church, VA debate between Jim Scott and Christopher Merola on October 21, 2009, he did so unannounced to either the Scott or Merola campaigns. In fact, candidate Merola had never met the leader of the Northern Virginia Tea Party until the October 21, 2009 debate.

Jim Scott refused to answer the Tea Party leader’s questions and instead hurled insults at him, along with the other Tea Party attendees who numbered about a dozen overall. Scott's insults resulted in boos and hisses from the debate crowd, including those who were not part of the Tea Party movement. In fact, Jim Scott caused a minor raucous and disruption of the debate by his harsh and intolerant behavior.

Candidate Christopher Merola stated that the duty of a State Delegate was to represent all the people of the district, even those a State Delegate may not agree with politically.

Scott then accused Christopher Merola of coordinating his campaign activities with the Tea Party member’s attendance. Merola responded by saying that he had never met the Tea Party leader before that night and that people of all political persuasions were allowed to attend.

Jim Scott Shows a Careless Disconnect with His Constituents

For all of 2009, Jim Scott’s web page (
http://www.delegatejimscott.com),
has had no content on his Issues or Community Service pages. In a day and age where technology is so crucial to informing the voters, Jim Scott's web site still has empty pages and Scott refuses to update his web site so that his constituents will know where he stands on important issues.

Candidate Merola took issue with Jim Scott’s empty web pages in the October 21, 2009 debate, calling on Scott to add content to his web pages.  Jim Scott has yet to do so.

Jim Scott Refuses to Keep His Word to Not Raise Taxes During a Recession

During their October 6, 2009 debate in McLean, Jim Scott agreed with Christopher Merola and Governor Kaine that    raising taxes during a recession was a bad idea. Yet, in 2008, during a recession, Scott voted to raise tax rates on motor vehicles, occupancy tax rates and the sales tax rate. Scott has even called for an increase in the gasoline tax this past year.

Such a double standard on matters that will harm working families during an economic recession demonstrates that Jim Scott has lost touch with his own constituency.

Christopher Merola and his wife, Tressa Harper Merola, have lived in Northern Virginia for some seven years now.

They have each worked on Capitol Hill and believe in making a contribution to the political process.  They have even sacrificed at times to do so.

The freedom and liberty that our founding fathers desired for our nation are values they hold dear.
