Political Background
Christopher Merola began working on political campaigns in 1996 while in graduate school. In 2000, Chris helped a Pennsylvania State Senator, Melissa Hart, successfully campaign and win the 4th Congressional seat of Pennsylvania. Hart became the first and only Republican woman in Pennsylvania to win a Congressional seat.Soon after being elected to that office, Hart named Christopher Merola as her Field Representative and Military and Veterans Affairs Liaison for the 4th Congressional District. Chris helped many veterans with their VA claims and assisted in the enlistment and academy nomination process of Hart's constituents.
Christopher Merola's crowning achievement as Hart's Field Representative was the spearheading of the I-376 Corridor transportation project. This project, which is still underway in Pennsylvania and was first proposed to candidate Melissa Hart by Christopher Merola, entailed the renaming of several state roads which connected to I-376.
Pennsylvania state roads 422, 60, toll road 60 and 22/30 each connect to I-376 but do not clearly allow for commuters to understand the connection. Furthermore, in his 2001 research for the I-376 Corridor project, Christopher Merola discovered that the Pittsburgh International Airport was the only international airport in the nation that did not have an interstate connection. Renaming the aformentioned state roads as I-376 allows for the Pittsburgh International Airport to have its interstate connection, while allowing for commuters to connect with an interstate highway without the confusion of four interconnecting state roads.
Upon resigning from Hart's staff in order to complete his masters degree internship in June of 2002, Chris worked on a Congressional campaign in Ohio where he met several Hill staffers that were impressed with his political acumen. These Hill staffers invited Chris to stay with them on Capitol Hill as he looked for political work.
After finding work in public relations, Chris moved to Arlington, VA, in 2003. He and his hometown sweetheart, Tressa Harper Merola, married in December of 2003 and she began working for Congressman Todd Akin (MO-02) in January of 2004.
In 2007, Congressman Todd Akin asked Chris to build a new Washington, DC. press operation for his office. Chris worked for Congressman Akin for one year, designing a new web site, writing speeches and talking points and designing a new e-newsletter for the Congressman. His work caught the attention of Larry Ward, President and CEO of Political Media, Inc., a New Media firm on Capitol Hill. Chris was hired as the Political Director for Political Media in April 2008 and still works there today. He is responsible for consulting with political candidates, races and causes.
Chris also has had the fortunate opportunity to be a guest columnist for the prestigious web magazine: www.townhall.com, where he writes a column approximately once a month.
