Education

Funding

In order to fund our education programs without raising taxes, we must increase the amount of education money that goes to the school districts.  This can be done by spending less education money on administrative costs, and using the savings to fund schools across Virginia.

Lt. Governor Bill Bolling has recently unveiled his 65% solution plan for education.  It would ensure that 65% of the Virginia education budget goes to the school districts.

By ensuring that 65% of Virginia's education budget goes directly to the schools, we can increase funding for Virginia's teachers and students by $480 million a year.  I agree with Bill Bolling's plan and will write legislation that makes it mandatory for 65-70% of the Virginia education budget go directly to the school districts in Virginia.

By thinking "outside the box" we can more properly fund education without raising taxes.

Curriculum

In recent years, we have seen many public schools drop their art and music programs in order to pay for other expenses.  This will not happen on my watch.

Research shows that not all children learn in the same way.  There can not be a "one size fits all" pattern to teach every child.  We must be willing to embrace alternative methods of learning so that all children can succeed.

Art and music must be an integral part of any school curriculum and I will ensure that such programs are adequately funded.

Alternatives

Building upon the idea that not all children learn in the same way, I believe we must provide an alternative education for parents with children who have learning disabilities.  I have spoken with parents who have children with learning disabilties and their stories of tragedy make me cringe.

Time after time their children are bullied by other students.  The teachers are overwhelmed and unable to take the time to individualize their lessons for learning disabled children.

I have a plan to create a charter school in every county in Virginia.  These schools will focus on the alternative methods of learning for the learning disabled and the creative minded students.  We must provide an alternative to parents so their children can learn and prosper without fear.
